Victoria Police has denied reports that the officer injured in a shooting at South Melbourne yesterday was reloading his gun when he was shot.

The claim was made by the Police Association which says all officers should be equipped with new semi-automatic weapons.

Victoria Police command say Senior Constable McHenry told them he had reloaded his gun and was ducking for cover when he was shot.

He remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital after having surgery for gun shot wounds to his leg.

The gunman, 25 year old Samir Ograzden of Essendon was killed in the shoot-out.

The two other men who were in the car with Ograzden were taken into custody before he fled the scene. They are expected to be charged on summons.
